Energy lawyers in Cyprus

We advise developers, investors and lenders from site acquisition through to operation and exit. Our work sits where regulation, land, contracts and finance meet, which is where most energy projects in Cyprus are won or delayed.

How we help

  • Solar, wind and storage project development, including permits and licences
  • Grid connection and dealings with the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) and the system operators
  • Power purchase agreements and offtake arrangements
  • EPC contracts, land leases and project documentation
  • Project finance, security and refinancing
  • Acquisition and sale of operating assets and project companies

Selected experience

  • Acting as Cyprus legal counsel to one of the largest Greek energy groups on its Cyprus renewable energy portfolio, advising on photovoltaic parks and energy storage, EPC contracts, power purchase agreements, land leases, regulatory matters before CERA and Lobbying Law compliance
  • Acted as Cyprus legal counsel to GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) on the development of a new legal and regulatory framework for renewable energy projects in Cyprus
  • Advised the competent Cyprus government ministries, following a public tender, on floating photovoltaics, energy storage and offshore renewables
  • Advised international investor groups on renewable energy projects in Cyprus with a combined capacity of more than 50MW

Common questions

Who regulates renewable energy projects in Cyprus?
The Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) issues licences and sets the regulatory framework for electricity generation and storage. Grid connection is dealt with by the system operators, and planning and environmental permits are issued by the competent authorities.

Can renewable energy be sold directly to businesses in Cyprus?
The Cyprus electricity market allows bilateral arrangements, including power purchase agreements between producers and consumers or suppliers, subject to the market rules and the licensing framework. The terms of the PPA largely decide the bankability of the project.
