Common questions
How does the Cyprus IP regime work?
Since 1 July 2016, Cyprus applies the OECD modified nexus approach. Subject to conditions, 80% of qualifying profits from qualifying intangible assets, such as patents and copyrighted software, may be deductible, in proportion to the qualifying research and development carried out by the taxpayer. Marketing-related assets such as trade marks do not qualify.
Does an EU trade mark protect a brand in Cyprus?
Yes. An EU trade mark registered with the EU Intellectual Property Office covers all EU member states, including Cyprus. A national Cyprus registration can also be obtained, which may be appropriate for a brand used only locally.
