A significant milestone for our firm and a great honour to participate as legal advisors in a project of strategic importance for Cyprus’s energy transition.
The law firms AMG MYLONAS & ASSOCIATES, LLC and Papadopoulos, Lycourgos & Co LLC participated as Legal Advisors in the HYDRO-RES project (“Technical support for floating photovoltaics, energy storage and offshore renewable energy in Cyprus”), which was implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry of Cyprus and the Water Development Department.
Within the framework of the project, our legal team undertook and successfully completed the legal analysis and preparation of a comprehensive legal study and legal recommendations for the development of large-scale solutions in the field of renewable energy and energy storage in Cyprus. The study examines the existing legislative and regulatory framework, as well as the potential for the development and operation of floating photovoltaic systems (FPV), pumped hydro energy storage projects (Pumped Hydro Energy Storage – PHES), and offshore renewable energy projects, with the aim of enhancing regulatory readiness and establishing appropriate legal tools for the future implementation of such projects.
The project was awarded to AMG MYLONAS & ASSOCIATES, LLC and Papadopoulos, Lycourgos & Co LLC by Deutsche Gesellschaft for Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH following a closed competitive tender procedure, confirming our legal expertise and experience in the fields of energy, renewable energy and regulatory compliance. The project was financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM) of the European Commission, under the Technical Support Instrument (TSI), with the objective of supporting Cyprus in identifying sustainable legal, technical and economic pathways for the promotion and implementation of innovative energy solutions.
During the project’s final dissemination event, held at Hilton Park in Nicosia, with the participation of representatives from the public and private sectors, academia and civil society, our legal team presented the key findings of the legal analysis covering the three thematic pillars of the project.
The HYDRO-RES project constitutes an important foundation for future policy and investment decisions aimed at integrating innovative renewable energy technologies in Cyprus and contributes to the country’s transition towards a more sustainable and energy-secure future.
Warm thanks to our entire legal team involved in the project, as well as to all partners and collaborators in Cyprus and abroad, for the excellent cooperation throughout the last two years in the context of this demanding and innovative project.
